Ivan Manuel Menezes, the CEO of Diageo, the largest spirits company in the world, passed away on Wednesday, the company announced. He was born in India and according to individuals familiar with the situation, Menezes, 64, who was scheduled to retire at the end of this month, was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of illnesses, including a stomach ulcer.
He died in London, the reason for his death was not known immediately.
According to a Monday announcement from Diageo, Debra Crew, the CEO-designate, will take over the top position temporarily, beginning immediately while Menezes was undergoing medical attention.
Menezes was born in Pune and whose father, Manuel Menezes, was the head of the Indian Railway Board, attended the esteemed St. Stephen's College in Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad for his education.
Diageo said in a statement, "Over the weekend, we learned that Ivan's recovery suffered a significant setback due to complications, which followed emergency surgery on the ulcer."
Menezes, who was born in Pune and whose father was the head of the Indian Railway Board, attended the esteemed St. Stephen's College in Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad for his education.
On March 28, Diageo, the company behind Johnnie Walker whisky, Tanqueray gin and Don Julio tequila, announced Crew's nomination to succeed Menezes.
In the March 28 announcement, the company had said, "During Ivan's tenure, Diageo has made great strides towards its ambition to become one of the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer products companies in the world.
"Diageo has grown significantly during this period, now selling over 200 brands in more than 180 markets and is today, the number one company by net sales value in Scotch whisky, vodka, gin, rum, Canadian whisky, liqueurs, and also tequila, a category in which only eight years ago the company had no substantive position."
