India's richest 1% own 40% of India's wealth

A new study on Monday showed that the wealthiest 1% in India now own more than 40% of the country's total wealth, while the bottom half of the population together share just 3% of the wealth.

According to the India supplement of an annual inequality report released by Oxfam International on the first day of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, the combined wealth of India's 100 richest has touched $660 billion (Rs 54.12 lakh crore).

To put this into perspective, this is close to being an amount that could fund the entire Indian Budget for more than 18 months.

According to the Oxfam report, the top 10 wealthiest people in India are Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, Shiv Nadar, Uday Kotak, Radhakishan Damani, Azim Premji, Cyrus Poonawalla, Lakshmi Mittal, Kumar Birla, and Dilip Shanghvi.
