E-pharmacies get DGCI Notice - Amazon, Flipkart included

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has recently issued a show-cause notice to Amazon, Flipkart, and 20 other online sellers over the sale of drugs without a valid license. The notice cites a December 12, 2018, Delhi High Court order which prohibits the online sale of medicines without a license.

The notice states that the sale or stock or exhibit or offer for sale or distribution of any drug requires a license from the concerned state licensing authority and conditions of a license are required to be complied with by the license holders.

The notice was welcomed by the trader's body Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal, who demanded that the government strictly enforce the law and the judgment of the Delhi high court. They also pointed out that several online medicine sellers are foreign-controlled and thus, are ineligible to seek these retail licenses.
