Amazon is set to bid farewell to its Amazon Style clothing stores by next week, marking another major shift in its retail strategy. The e-commerce giant had previously announced plans to close down most of its physical stores, including its Books, 4-Star, and Pop Up locations, earlier this year. In addition, they revealed their intention to shutter eight of their Go convenience stores in March.
The Style clothing stores, however, had a short-lived existence. Amazon launched its first Style store in Los Angeles in May 2022, with promises of a personalized and convenient shopping experience and the creation of local jobs. A second store opened in Columbus, Ohio, in October 2022.
In a statement, spokesperson Kristen Kish stated, "After careful consideration, we've decided to close our two Amazon Style physical retail stores and focus on our online fashion shopping experience, offering new selections at great value and introducing innovative technology to cater to every customer's needs. We're actively assisting affected employees in finding new roles within Amazon. While we are closing these stores, physical retail remains integral to our business, and we continue to invest in the growth of our grocery stores business, including Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Go, and third-party partnerships."
The Amazon Style stores are slated to close their doors by November 9th. Despite the recent closures, Amazon still maintains a significant retail presence, with Amazon Fresh grocery stores and over 500 Whole Foods stores across the United States.
