Shortest waiting period: Affordable EVs from Tata, MGp

Electric vehicles (EVs) have transitioned from being a niche offering to a rapidly growing market segment. Just two years ago, this shift was not evident, but now there are numerous options available that cater to the mass market buyer. Almost every vehicle segment now has multiple EV choices, with some of them performing exceptionally well and generating substantial demand. Let's examine five EVs priced below Rs 20 lakh and explore their respective waiting periods.

1. MG Comet EV is priced between Rs 7.98 lakh and Rs 9.98 lakh (ex-showroom)

Despite being the smallest and most budget-friendly EV in the country, the MG Comet EV has already gained substantial popularity since its launch a month ago, resulting in a waiting period of up to three months in certain cities. However, cities such as Hyderabad and Kolkata have a more manageable waiting time of approximately 45 days, while Pune and Bengaluru have a two-month waiting period.

2.  Tata Tiago EV is available at a price range of Rs 8.69 lakh to Rs 12.03 lakh (ex-showroom)
Tata, the Indian carmaker, offers the second most affordable electric vehicle option. The Tata Tiago EV, which is an all-electric version of the popular Tiago model, was introduced in India towards the end of 2022 and has received a highly positive reception. With over 20,000 units already on the road, the Tiago EV has gained significant popularity. Presently, there is a waiting period of up to three months for this electric hatchback in cities such as Chennai and Bengaluru. However, in Kolkata, dealerships have a shorter waiting time of just one month for delivery.

3. Tata Tigor EV is priced between Rs 12.49 lakh and Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom)

Although it is one of the older EVs on this list, the Tata Tigor EV stands out as the only electric sedan priced below Rs 20 lakh. This unique offering has garnered consistent demand, resulting in a waiting period of up to three months in locations like Delhi. In most cities, there is a two-month waiting period for the Tata Tigor EV due to its popularity.

4. Tata Nexon EV is available at a price range of Rs 14.49 lakh to Rs 19.54 lakh (ex-showroom)
Tata introduced the Nexon EV as one of the early electric offerings targeted at the Indian market. Over time, it has undergone several updates to stay competitive and align with the advancing technology landscape. As a result, this sub-4m electric SUV continues to maintain its popularity, emerging as a preferred choice among buyers. In Mumbai, the waiting period for the Nexon EV can stretch up to three and a half months, while residents of Pune or Kolkata can expect a shorter waiting time of around one month to bring it home.

5.  Mahindra XUV400 EV is priced between Rs 15.98 lakh and Rs 18.98 lakh (ex-showroom)
Despite being introduced earlier this year, the Mahindra XUV400 continues to experience significant demand, particularly as one of the only two electric SUV options priced below Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). While the waiting period for the XUV400 can extend up to four months in major cities, it remains comparatively better than other Mahindra models such as the XUV700 and Scorpio N, which have waiting periods approaching nearly a year.

While the number of pure electric options under the Rs 20 lakh range is currently limited compared to the available internal combustion engine (ICE) choices, the transition towards electric vehicles is steadily progressing. We anticipate that these waiting periods will continue to increase as the infrastructure for electric vehicles develops and more individuals embrace this new technology.
