Mumbai Dating App Scams: What Are They?

Online dating has been in the limelight for the past few years, making it quite easy to connect with like-minded people seamlessly. The convenience comes along with a sour truth: dating apps have turned into a den for scammers. According to the police, many men have been cheated in very critical dating traps laid by women using the apps Tinder and Bumble, both connected to these online dating apps in Mumbai. The scams they perpetuate are complex in a trap, resulting in financial loss and simultaneously causing emotional distress.

How the Scams Work

The scams traditionally start with a mutual like on a well-known dating app. One pretends to be a genuine lover and establishes a quick and seemingly reliable relationship with his victim. After that, he would suggest shifting their conversation to another platform, for example, WhatsApp. The one who got the trust would start persuading the user to transfer his money – with the excuse of some emergency cases.

Mumbai scam victims met their scammers through various dating sites including Tinder and Bumble. A post about it is going viral on X.

An Emerging Threat

Recent reports indicate that 12 people from Mumbai have recently become the victims of one or another such scam, with one individual losing more than ₹61,000. Victims are lured by promises of relationship or companionship. Scamsters put much work into the task and create fake profiles at times, stealing personal photos, and doing everything possible in inventing often-believable stories to influence their target.

Protecting Yourself

Some precautions that one should take while using dating apps so that no one gets cheated unnecessarily.

Verify Profiles: Deeply check the profile pictures, by doing a reverse image search.

Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Don't share personal details or sending money to someone you've only met online.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter any suspicious behavior, report the profile to the app's support team immediately.

The Legal Perspective

The police agencies are already being informed of the swindles and are highly cautioning the users to be careful since in case anyone becomes a victim, the cyber crime cell will take complaints at height and eventually trace and arrest the swindles.  However, prevention is the best implement to fight against such illegal activities.

Beware or get Compromised

The Mumbai dating app scams stand as a pointer to the danger of online dating. They say these apps make it easy for one to come across someone new. However, the application user is supposed to be cautious enough not to fall victim to such scenarios.
